Biosecurity Incidents: Planning and Risk Management for Livestock Diseases

Victoria has a global reputation for its safe, ‘clean’ food, which has played an important role in the profitable growth of jobs, investment, and exports for the state’s agricultural production. Failure to address biosecurity incidents can have a catastrophic social, economic and trade consequence, as demonstrated by the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the UK and, more recently, avian influenza in Asia.

The report examines whether the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) effectively manages biosecurity risks for Victoria’s livestock and the associated risks to human health, the economy and trade.
