Victoria Institute of Teaching's (VIT) functions include
registration, investigation, professional development, ensuring
standards of professional practice are met, teacher education
program accreditation and stakeholder education.
This audit found that overall, VIT performs well as a regulator.
The community can be confident that teachers in Victorian schools
are appropriately qualified, suitable to teach and competent in the
English language. Its registration practices give a high level of
assurance that only those teachers who meet the regulatory
standards are registered and that any unregistered teachers are
identified.
However, VIT needs to improve the understanding teachers and
principals have about its role. VIT has developed a new
communications strategy and needs to progressively evaluate the
effectiveness of this.
