Mental health services for people in crisis

Tabled: 17 October 2002

Overview

Mental disorders are a leading cause of disability in the community. The objectives of the audit were to determine: whether Area Mental Health Services (AMHS) were providing timely and appropriate services to people aged 16 to 64 years who were experiencing a crisis associated with their mental illness, or who were at significant risk of experiencing a crisis; the impact of the current mental health service system on carers and families of people with a mental disorder; whether the rights of patients subject to community treatment orders and involuntary admission to hospital have been adequately protected; whether funds allocated to public mental health services have been distributed according to need; whether an effective framework was in place to measure and monitor the effectiveness of mental health crisis prevention and response, at a Statewide and individual hospital level.
