Effective management of wastewater generated from household use is necessary to protect both public and environmental health. This audit will examine whether relevant state agencies are effectively managing the environmental and public health risks posed by septic tanks, with a focus on the Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Ranges.

In this audit we assessed if the state is effectively managing its exposure to liabilities from the rehabilitation of mines on private and public land.

Recovering and Reprocessing Resources from Waste

In 2016–17, Victorians generated and managed nearly 12.9 million tonnes of waste. Metropolitan Melbourne accounted for around 80 per cent of this. Sustainability Victoria (SV) estimates that Victorians recovered 67 per cent of the 12.9 million tonnes for recycling and sent the remaining 33 per cent to landfill.

Security of Water Infrastructure Control Systems

Infrastructure control systems are increasingly the target of cyberattacks worldwide. Water providers rely on this technology to operate and monitor a portion of their water infrastructure assets that deliver critical water and sewerage services to Victorian households.

Managing the Municipal and Industrial Landfill Levy

In Victoria, a landfill levy system plays an important role in minimising waste impacts on the environment and promoting investment in alternatives to landfill. Funds from the levy are also used to fund agencies responsible for waste planning and management in Victoria. Councils and landfill operators pay the levy, collected through tip fees. This audit determines whether the Municipal and Industrial Landfill Levy distributions are consistent with, and achieving, their legislative purposes.

Victoria’s natural and built coastal assets provide social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits for all Victorians. This audit determined whether natural and built assets on Victoria’s coastline are being protected against coastal erosion and inundation.
