Victoria's roads, railways, schools, prisons and hospitals are part of the $265 billion of non-financial assets that government departments and agencies manage. Managing these assets well is important because they support the delivery of services that affect all Victorians.

Relevant and reliable performance information is essential to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of council services and decision-making.

At 30 June 2018, the 79 Victorian councils controlled $102.1 billion in assets and infrastructure, including land, roads, buildings, drains, footpaths and bridges.
